Van Eck Forest
Type:
Forestry
Verifier:
SGS / Scientific Certification Systems
Standard:
Climate Action Reserve
Location:
Humboldt County, California
Country:
United States
In addition to helping cool the climate, the Van Eck Forest Project helps protect wildlife habitat, safeguard clean water supplies and restore biodiversity.
The certified emissions reductions from the Van Eck Forest Project are derived from the sustainable management of roughly 2,200 acres of working redwood forest in Humboldt County, California. Forests like Van Eck provide climate benefits by absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere and storing it as carbon in trees for hundreds of years or longer. Established working forests are especially effective at storing carbon as they grow older due to the fact they store substantially greater volumes of carbon over a shorter time than do young trees. The Van Eck Forest Project is conserved and managed by the Pacific Forest Trust to increase carbon stores.
California’s forest carbon program is important to the fight against global warming because forest loss is the second largest cause of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Only fossil fuel emissions do more harm to the climate. Converting forestlands to other uses accounts for 20-25 percent of all human-caused CO2 emissions annually, a pollution effect equal to the emissions generated by 1.2 billion cars.
The Van Eck Forest Project has met the California Climate Action Registry’s (CCAR) tough emission reductions verification requirements, making it the first working forest in the nation to generate CO2 emission reductions of a quality standard high enough to be adopted by the state’s Air Resources Board. The accuracy of Pacific Forest Trust’s measurements for actual carbon stored so far and for projections over the 100-year project lifetime have been reviewed and verified by state-licensed, independent third-parties. The Van Eck Forest Project was verified by a SGS, a global leader in verification, and Scientific Certification Systems, the leading U.S. independent forestry certifier.
