Emerald Dairy
Type:
Dairy Methane Capture
Verifier:
SES Inc.
Standard:
CDM Methodology ACM0010
Location:
Emerald, Wisconsin
Country:
United States
Turning cow waste into energy is one objective of Wisconsin’s Emerald Dairy. The Dairy uses an anaerobic digester that treats cow waste to reduce methane emissions and generate energy and heat. The process reduces risk of water pollution and minimizes area odors.
Dairy production at Emerald Dairy began in July 1999. Manure and wastewater from its buildings was originally treated with anaerobic lagoons. By October 1999 a cover was placed on the lagoons and the methane capture and combustion began. In 2005, an engineered anaerobic digester was installed to replace the covered lagoons as a primary treatment system. Biogas is generated by the digester.
There are several control devices on site. A flare is used to combust most of the biogas, resulting in the destruction of the methane. (Photo 2) A biogas-fired boiler is used to heat the digester and provide hot water for the dairy operation (photo 6). In addition, there is an experimental process on site that cleans the biogas to provide methane (at 94% concentration) for packaging in gas cylinders (Photo 4) or tanker trucks. The digester also transforms the products left over when the methane is gone, which are not waste. The digested solids are now clean and used as cow bedding and fertilizer.
SES, Inc verified the emissions credits created at the Emerald Dairy site. The verification report documents that 9,271 emission reduction credits (metric tons carbon dioxide equivalent, CO2e) were generated at the Emerald Dairy between August 1, 2006 and December 31,2007. These credits were generated by the practice change of installing and operating an anaerobic digester instead of an open lagoon. Offset quantities were calculated using a protocol based on CDM Methodology ACM0010.
