Newton-McDonald Landfill

Type: Landfill Methane Capture
Verifier: First Environment, Inc.
Standard: Chicago Climate Exchange
Location: Neosho, Missouri
Country: United States
Landfills are the largest source of anthropogenic methane emissions in the U.S. Landfill methane is produced when organic materials are decomposed by bacteria in the absence of oxygen. The Newton-McDonald Landfill Project offsets these emissions by flaring the accumulated methane and reducing its negative impact on our planet.

The Newton-McDonald landfill initially installed a gas collection and destruction system in 1998. However the landfill experienced financial difficulties that forced it to take the gas collection system offline and return to passively venting landfill gases to the atmosphere. In September 2007 gas collection and flaring resumed in order to earn carbon offfsets that would provide a new revenue stream to the landfill. Support green projects like this one so they won’t have to shut down!

Methane production varies greatly from landfill to landfill depending on site-specific characteristics such as waste composition, moisture content, operating practices, landfill design, climate, and waste in place. If the methane generated by the landfill is not captured by a gas recovery system, it migrates through the landfill cover. When this happens, the soil oxidizes approximately ten percent of the methane generated. The remaining 90 percent is emitted into the atmosphere.

The Newton-McDonald Landfill operates a candlestick flare to destroy methane. A pipeline network collects landfill gas from 57 wells and directs it to a knockout tank that removes condensates. After purification, it passes through a blower and moves to the flare, where the methane is destroyed. First Environment, Inc conducted the verification from March through June 2008 consistent with the Chicago Climate Exchange Project Guidelines for Landfill Gas to ensure effective, transparent carbon offsets you can rely on.
