Usimart Biomass
Type:
Biomass Renewable Energy
Verifier:
SES, Inc.
Standard:
CDM methodology III.E. / CCX
Location:
Colniza, Mato Grosso
Country:
Brazil
The Usimart thermo-electric plant in Brazil uses only wood waste to generate electricity for the town of Colniza and reduces methane emissions due to controlled combustion of waste. It avoids the methane emissions generated during decomposition and puts waste to a good use.
The standard practice for sawmills in the area is to deposit this waste in unmanaged disposal areas on the sawmill property. Open burning of this waste is prohibited by Brazilian law, so in the absence of a controlled combustion project, the waste is left to decompose under anaerobic conditions. This generates huge amounts of methane emissions that go to our atmosphere.
Instead, the Usimart Biomass Project puts wood waste to a good use. Usimart uses the waste to fuel a boiler, which in turn powers an electrical turbine to create electricity and avoid the harmful methane emissions. The resulting ash is not waste either, since it is packed and sold as fertilizer in the area.
SES, Inc verified the emissions credits created at the Usimart Biomass Project using CDM Methodology III.E. for projects that avoid methane from “biomass or other organic matter that would have otherwise been left to decay under clearly anaerobic conditions throughout the crediting period in a solid waste disposal site without methane recovery. Additionally, SES used CCX’s Rulebook, Section 9.12 pertaining to “Offset Issuance for Electricity Produced by Renewable Energy,” as the guidance for the verification of the renewable electricity portion of this project. No renewable energy credits (RECs) are produced by this project.
